Using DICE to Ensure Success in Change Management Projects

How to maximise the chances of your project being successful.

We explore the DICE methodology and how you can use this to identify the things you need to do differently in order to maximise the likelihood of success of your project.

Research has shown that approximately 70% of all corporate change initiatives are not successful in the long term. Given the amount of money and time invested in change management projects, this is a fairly stunning statistic.

Why should this be the case ? There is plenty of help and advice available on the subject. Try a search on "change management" in Amazon UK - I found 4534 books available on the subject - so it is fair to say that a wide range of differing techniques exist for managing change.

There is, however, a very good published technique, which can be used to determine whether change projects will succeed. The DICE framework, developed by the Boston Consulting Group provides a quantified methodology that companies can use to assess whether their change initiatives will succeed or fail. What's more, if the scores for the various criteria are not good enough, changes can be made to the way the project is being managed in order to increase the likelihood of success.

The four criteria used are

Duration - Duration of project and frequency of project review.

Integrity of Performance - Capability of the team to manage the change process.

Commitment - Commitment of senior management and employees to the change process.

Effort - The increased effort that employees must make to implement the changes.

A specific methodology is used to calculate the project score and the score gives a measure of the likelihood of success of the project.

Full details of the technique can be obtained from the Harvard Business Review. The article will cost you $6 to download - a very good investment. Alternatively you can contact AGP Consulting and we will work through this methodology with you to assess the likelihood of success of your proposed change programme.
